The Center for General English at the Yemen College of Middle Eastern Studies is proud to offer a unique program in General English focusing on the practical English skills necessary for professional and academic success.

      The Program

The General English coursework is composed of
the language skills and grammar needed to communicate in the international arena. YCMES instructors teach International English as it is spoken and understood globally – our native-English instructors are drawn from the UK, USA, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

The course places a particular emphasis on writing, presentation and team skills, all of which are vital in the professional world.  Students attend seperate classes speaking and listening and reading and writing classes to focus on these key skills.

The General English program consists of six levels in line with the internationally-recognised Common European Framework: Starter, Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate and Advanced, each of which takes three five-week terms to complete.

The program uses two different series of Cambridge University Press books: Interchange 3rd Edition, and English Result. In addition to these materials, the instructors tailor the courses to the students’ needs with supplementary material. There is a heavy focus on English-language computer skills and students are required to complete regular assignments, presentations and group projects.
