In order to compete on an interntational stage, Yemen’s businessmen, businesswomen and government officials need to master the art of communication in the worldwide language of business. They need to be able to give presentations, write reports and proposals, and communicate both formally and informally with their overseas associates.
YCMES has built a program to suit the needs of Yemeni banks, communication companies and oil companies, designed to benefit business leaders and managers in particluar.
Syllabus
The Business English syllabus, developed in affiliation with the UK’s Cranfield School of Management, follows the learning outcomes of Oxford University Press’ Business Result series. While these books form the core of the program, a greater emphasis is placed on supplementary materials created by the instructor in order to tailor the classes to the exact needs of the students.
As reading and writing skill sets require different teaching techniques than listening and speaking, YCMES now splits these areas between two classes and two instructors. We are the first institution in Yemen to introduce this system, and we are very excited about the improved experience that we are able to offer.
The use of computers is fully integrated into our Business English program. Students are expected to use Microsoft PowerPoint when giving presentations in class and to draft their essays in APA style using Microsoft Word. Email plays an important role, too, especially at higher levels, and the new YCMES online database system allows learners and their corporate sponsors to track their progress online in real time.
Instruction
Students attend class three afternoons per week, receiving a total of ten hours of classroom instruction: five hours of reading and writing and five hours of listening and speaking. Students are welcome to schedule up two hours of one-on-one instruction per week with their instructors during office hours. The computer lab and library are open to our students eight hours per day with an instructor on hand to give lessons and provide assistance.
Terms are five weeks long and each term is followed by a week-long break.
We run classes from Introductory to Advanced levels, and each level takes three five-week terms to complete.
Upon successful completion of the Business English program, approximately 15 months, students will receive a diploma accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education. Students also have the opportunity to take the TOEIC test upon completion of the Diploma. This cost is included in the program.
To be accepted onto our program, we require candidates for our Centre for Business English to demonstrate at least an Intermediate level of mastery in general English.
